Fire Safety Tips for a Fun and Safe July 4th

As the July 4th holiday approaches, we know many of you are looking forward to fireworks, barbecues, and celebrations with family and friends. While this day is full of fun and festivity, it’s also one of the most dangerous times of the year for fires. At Denver Fire Protection, your safety is our top priority. Here are some essential fire safety tips to ensure your Independence Day is both enjoyable and safe.

Fireworks Safety

  1. Leave It to the Professionals: The best way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by professionals. Personal fireworks can be extremely dangerous and are illegal in many areas.

  2. Use Sparklers Safely: If you do use sparklers, always supervise children and make sure they hold sparklers away from their body. Sparklers can reach temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to melt some metals.

  3. Keep Water Nearby: Always have a bucket of water or a garden hose ready in case of a fire. Soak used fireworks and sparklers in water before disposing of them.

  4. Follow Local Laws: Make sure to check your local laws and regulations regarding the use of fireworks. Many areas have restrictions to prevent fires and injuries.

Grill Safety

  1. Grill Outdoors: Never use a grill indoors, in a garage, or under a covered patio. Grills should be placed well away from the home, deck railings, and overhanging branches.

  2. Keep It Clean: Clean your grill regularly to remove grease buildup, which can cause flare-ups and fires.

  3. Stay Attentive: Never leave a lit grill unattended. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area.

  4. Use Proper Tools: Use long-handled grilling tools to keep a safe distance from the heat and flames.

Campfire Safety

  1. Choose the Right Spot: Build campfires at least 25 feet away from tents, shrubs, and anything that can burn. Avoid building fires on windy days.

  2. Contain the Fire: Use a fire pit or build a ring of rocks to contain the fire. Keep the fire small and manageable.

  3. Never Leave Unattended: Always have someone watch the fire. Never leave it unattended, even for a moment.

  4. Extinguish Completely: Douse the fire with water, stir the ashes, and douse again until it is completely out. The ashes should be cool to the touch.

General Safety Tips

  1. Check Smoke Alarms: Ensure your smoke alarms are working properly by testing them and replacing batteries if needed.

  2. Have an Escape Plan: Make sure your family knows your fire escape plan and practice it regularly.

  3. Be Prepared: Keep a fire extinguisher handy and know how to use it. A small fire can quickly get out of control if not addressed immediately.

  4. Stay Informed: Pay attention to local weather conditions and fire warnings. Follow any guidance or restrictions from local authorities.
